The Federal High Court in Warri has ordered the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to maintain the status quo in the ongoing legal dispute concerning the enforcement of Nigeria’s tinted glass permit policy.
The ruling was issued on Friday in Suit No. FHC/WR/CS/103/2025, filed by prominent lawyer John Aikpokpo-Martins against the IGP and the NPF.
The case challenges the legality and enforcement procedures of the police regarding the issuance and demand for tinted glass permits by private vehicle owners.
According to Bridget Edokwe, Publicity Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the court’s interim order explicitly directed the police to respect the judicial process and avoid any actions that could undermine the pending suit.
“The court has instructed the police to uphold the rule of law by refraining from further enforcement actions until the matter is fully resolved,” Edokwe said in a statement.
The legal challenge comes amid widespread public criticism of the police’s handling of the tinted glass permit regime, with many Nigerians accusing law enforcement officers of harassment and extortion under the guise of enforcement.
