The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on the National Assembly to expedite action on pending electoral reforms, warning that early passage of the legislation is vital to preparations for the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, made the appeal in Abuja on Thursday while receiving a delegation from the European Union Election Observation Follow-Up Mission to Nigeria.

Yakubu stressed that timely legal frameworks are essential for effective electoral planning and administration. He noted that out of the 23 recommendations issued by the EU following the 2023 general elections, INEC had already implemented eight within its mandate.

“The remaining 15 recommendations require action by other institutions, including the Executive, Legislature, Judiciary, political parties, and other stakeholders,” Yakubu said.

The INEC boss emphasized the Commission’s commitment to transparent and credible elections but reiterated that comprehensive reform was a collective responsibility.

Speaking on behalf of the EU delegation, Barry Andrews, leader of the mission, commended INEC’s efforts in addressing the recommendations. However, he cautioned that partial implementation of reforms would not be sufficient to safeguard democracy.

“Nigeria must move beyond half-measures. Transparency and accountability are non-negotiable if democracy is to survive,” Andrews stated.

He added that EU election observation is aimed at strengthening democracy in Nigeria, across Africa, and globally.
