The Kaduna State chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of one of its prominentI chieftains, Bashir Zakariya, in a car accident along the Zaria-Kaduna highway on Thursday.
Zakariya, who until his death served as the SDP Chairman for Zone One Senatorial District in Kaduna State, was reportedly travelling from Zaria to Kaduna when the fatal crash occurred on the ever-busy expressway. He died on the spot, according to party officials.
In a statement issued by the SDP’s Kaduna State Publicity Secretary, the late Zakariya was described as “a man of integrity, courage, and vision,” whose unwavering passion for justice, democracy, and grassroots political development left a lasting impact on many within and beyond the party.
“He was a leader who stood firmly for truth, spoke with conviction, and worked selflessly to strengthen the Social Democratic Party in Zone One and across Kaduna State,” the statement added.
The tragic incident has once again drawn attention to the alarming rate of accidents on the Zaria-Kaduna highway. In the wake of Zakariya’s passing, the SDP in Kaduna has called on both the state and federal governments to urgently intensify safety measures and rehabilitation efforts on the expressway to prevent further loss of lives.
