INEC Extends Nationwide Voter Registration by Two WeeThe Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by an additional two weeks, giving eligible Nigerians more time to register ahead of future elections.
The electoral body said the decision followed feedback from its state offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders who called for more time to accommodate prospective voters.
In a statement, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, said the extension reflects the Commission’s determination to ensure that no eligible Nigerian is denied the opportunity to be included in the National Register of Voters.
“In order to provide additional opportunity for eligible citizens who are yet to register, the Commission has extended the exercise,” Haruna said.
He added: “The extension underscores the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that every eligible Nigerian has a fair and reasonable opportunity to be included in the Register of Voters ahead of future electoral activities.”
Alongside the extension, INEC also unveiled a new online self-service registration platform for first-time voters, allowing eligible citizens to begin and complete their voter registration, including biometric capture, using their personal devices without first visiting an INEC office.
According to Haruna, the system features robust identity verification, biometric validation and backend integrity checks to safeguard the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.
“In furtherance of its commitment to innovation, accessibility, and improved service delivery, the Commission is pleased to announce the introduction of a self-service registration option (online) for eligible first-time voters,” he said.
He explained that the service is available through the Commission’s dedicated CVR portal, where applicants can also access a step-by-step registration guide.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a credible, inclusive and accessible voter registration process while leveraging technology to improve citizens’ experience.
The Commission urged all eligible Nigerians who are yet to register to take advantage of the extended registration period and the newly introduced digital registration option.
