The Chinese government has issued a strong warning against any foreign interference in Nigeria’s domestic affairs, following recent threats by U.S. President, Donald Trump to take military action over alleged persecution of Christians in the country.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, the spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mao Ning, reaffirmed Beijing’s support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
She emphasized that Nigeria has the sovereign right to determine its own path of development without external pressure.
“China firmly supports the administration of President Bola Tinubu as it leads its people on a development path suited to its national conditions,” Mao Ning stated.
Describing Nigeria as one of China’s comprehensive strategic partners, Ning highlighted Beijing’s commitment to standing with the West African nation amid increasing global tensions.
“China firmly opposes any country using religion or human rights as a pretext to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, or to threaten them with sanctions or military force,” she added.
Her remarks followed Trump’s recent decision to redesignate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern”, citing what he described as an ongoing “Christian genocide” in the country.
