NUJ Unveils 2025 Press Freedom, Good Governance Awards

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, has announced that the “2025 NUJ Awards” will serve as a benchmark for assessing good governance and promoting accountability in Nigeria.

The President of the Union, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya gave the indication during a Press Freedom and Good Governance Awards news conference held at the NUJ National Secretariat in Abuja.

Comrade Yahaya emphasized that the awards would focus on recognizing public office holders and media professionals who had contributed to transparency, justice, equality, and national development.

He pointed out that nominations for the awards would be open from February 5 to March 28, 2025, while the awards ceremony had been scheduled for May 5, 2025, at the Africa Hall, Barcelona Hotel, Abuja.

According to the President, the awards were divided into Press Freedom Awards and Good Governance Awards.

“Press Freedom Awards will honor journalists and media stakeholders who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to press freedom, investigative reporting, and media development. Some notable categories include:
– Torch Bearers of Press Freedom Awards – Recognizing journalists who have faced harassment, injury, or imprisonment while upholding press freedom.
– Awarding a journalist whose investigative work has significantly impacted governance and public welfare, with a ₦1,000,000 prize.
– Defender of Press Freedom Awards – Given to individuals who have actively defended press freedom.
– Life Time Achievement Awards – For media professionals who have consistently supported press freedom and provided platforms for journalistic excellence.
– Distinguished Friend of the Media Awards – Recognizing public figures who have contributed to the protection and advancement of press freedom.

The President said the Good governance award would encourage transparency and excellence.

“The Good Governance Awards will recognize elected officials, policymakers, and corporate leaders who have excelled in governance and national development. Categories include:
– Transformative Leadership
– Innovative Leadership
– Peace Building and Conflict Resolution
– Rural Transformation
– Education and Health Care Delivery
– Infrastructure and Economic Development
– Transparency and ICT Revolution
– Defender of Democracy and Human Rights
– Corporate Social Responsibility and Constituency Development
– Effective Legislative Performance and Advocacy”

Comrade Yahaya urged the public to participate by nominating deserving individuals and organizations for the awards.

“Nominations, along with supporting documents, can be submitted via email to pressfreedomandgoodgovernanceawards@nuj.ng before the deadline on March 28, 2025.

He further stressed that the Good Governance Awards would serve as a tool for peer review among political leaders, fostering healthy competition and educating citizens on holding their leaders accountable.

The President reaffirmed NUJ’s commitment to ethical journalism, media professionalism, and press freedom, calling on authorities to ensure journalists operate without fear of persecution.
