President Bola Tinubu has approved a salary increase of between 30% and 80% for members of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, with about 250,000 military personnel set to benefit from the new pay package beginning next month.
The announcement was made in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Under the new salary structure, senior officers above the rank of colonel — including brigadier-generals, major-generals, lieutenant-generals and generals — will receive a 30% pay rise.
Personnel from the rank of colonel down to warrant officer will receive a 50% increase, while soldiers from private to staff sergeant will benefit from the highest adjustment of 80%.
The Presidency said the review will increase the military’s annual wage bill from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, describing the move as part of efforts to improve troop welfare amid ongoing operations against banditry, kidnapping and terrorism.
Mr Onanuga said the president approved the increase in recognition of the sacrifices made by military personnel in protecting the country.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” President Tinubu said.
He added that his administration would continue to prioritise the welfare of troops while investing in modern weapons and technology to strengthen the Armed Forces.
“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians,” the president said.
Mr Tinubu also urged military personnel to view the salary increase as a demonstration of the government’s appreciation for their service.
“I urge our servicemen to take our gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation.”
The latest pay review comes as the government faces continued security challenges across several parts of Nigeria and seeks to boost morale among troops engaged in counter-insurgency and internal security operations.
