The Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Abia State, Gladys Adama,, says over 1,000 people with various ailments have received free medical treatment from the scheme’s Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD).
Mrs Adama made this known at the 2025 NYSC 4th quarter HIRD event in Ohanze, Obingwa local government area.
She said the HIRD is a key programme designed to provide free medical services to underserved communities.
According to Mrs. Adama, the NYSC provides the medical personnel, including doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare staff, to deliver quality health services.
“Collaborators, including government and non-governmental agencies, supply drugs, medical consumables, and equipment for the programme.”
Former Governor of Abia State, Dr Okezie Ipeazu, commended the organisers for providing free healthcare services, calling the health initiative a step in the right direction.
Dr Emeka Nwakama of the Onunwa Foundation, an NGO collaborating with NYSC, explained that their partnership aimed to provide the less privileged in the community with needed healthcare services.
