The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has honoured Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong with a heartfelt tribute, praising him as a “committed and humble leader” after he announced his retirement from international football.
Troost-Ekong revealed his decision on Thursday via his official X (Twitter) account, thanking Nigerian fans, teammates, and coaches for their support throughout his ten-year journey with the national team.
The defender, who has played for Watford, Olympiakos, and PAOK, described representing Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup and multiple Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments as one of the greatest privileges of his career.
In a statement issued on Friday, NFF Director of Communications Ademola Olajire says the federation received the news with pride, noting the defender’s exceptional dedication. “Ekong gave everything to the Super Eagles,” Olajire said. “He led with passion, calmness, and responsibility, and he served Nigeria with remarkable patriotism.”
Olajire added that even before Ekong became captain, he consistently displayed discipline, ambition, and absolute commitment to the national colours. He described the former skipper as “a model professional and a leader the younger players should look up to.”
Highlighting Troost-Ekong’s outstanding performances at the 2019, 2021, and 2023 AFCON tournaments, Olajire said his contributions were vital to Nigeria’s bronze and silver medal finishes.
He described Ekong’s AFCON 2023 heroics, including three crucial goals and the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award, as “unforgettable moments in Nigerian football.”
With 83 international caps, World Cup appearances, and decisive tournament goals, Troost-Ekong retires as one of the most accomplished Super Eagles defenders of the modern era. “He leaves fulfilled, respected, and forever part of our football story,” Olajire stated.
The NFF congratulated him on a remarkable international career and wished him success in his future pursuits, assuring him of the federation’s continued support.
Troost-Ekong, who made his debut under Coach Sunday Oliseh in 2015, rose through the ranks from a promising newcomer to vice-captain and ultimately captain, becoming one of the few Nigerians ever named AFCON MVP.
