Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has sparked debate after commenting on the circumstances surrounding the death of his father, Fela Kuti.
Speaking during an Instagram livestream, Seun responded to criticism from a social media user who questioned Fela’s legacy, alleging that the late music icon infected his partners with HIV and died of AIDS.
In his response, Seun argued that responsibility for the illness should not be attributed solely to his father. He suggested that one of Fela’s partners may have contracted the virus elsewhere and unknowingly transmitted it to him.
Reflecting on his father’s lifestyle, Seun stated that Fela allowed his wives considerable personal freedom, including relationships outside their union. According to him, this arrangement was based on Fela’s belief in mutual freedom within his household.
He explained that while his father did not seek relationships outside his home, his partners were free to interact with others, provided such relationships were kept away from his residence.
Seun further suggested that stricter boundaries might have changed the outcome, adding that no individual is without fault.
He, however, maintained that despite his shortcomings, Fela Kuti remains a significant figure whose legacy was rooted in advocating for humanity and social justice.
