Manchester City striker Erling Haaland scored twice as Norway stunned Brazil 2-1 to book a place in the World Cup quarter-finals after a disciplined display and clinical finishing punished the five-time champions’ wastefulness.
Brazil controlled possession for much of the contest and created the better opportunities in the opening half but failed to capitalise, with Bruno Guimarães missing a 14th-minute penalty after Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland produced a superb save following a VAR review.
Vinícius Júnior, Gabriel Martinelli and Rayan all threatened before the interval, while Martin Ødegaard and Haaland tested Alisson as both sides went into the break level.
Norway looked the more dangerous side after the restart, with substitute Andreas Schjelderup transforming the attack following his introduction.
Brazil manager turned to Neymar and Endrick in search of a breakthrough, but it was Norway who struck first in the 79th minute.
Schjelderup delivered a pinpoint cross for Haaland, who powered a towering header beyond Alisson to hand Norway the lead.
Brazil pushed forward in pursuit of an equaliser, with Casemiro going close and Neymar causing problems from set pieces, but Norway’s defence held firm.
Haaland sealed a famous victory in the 90th minute after Schjelderup slipped a perfectly weighted pass into his path. The Norwegian striker kept his composure to slot home his second goal of the night and put his side 2-0 ahead.
Brazil pulled one back deep into 12 minutes of stoppage time after referee Ismail Elfath awarded a second penalty when Leo Østigård was ruled to have fouled Neymar inside the box.
Neymar converted from the spot in the 100th minute to reduce the deficit, but there was not enough time for Brazil to mount a comeback.
Haaland’s clinical brace, Schjelderup’s two assists and Nyland’s crucial first-half penalty save proved decisive as Norway secured one of the tournament’s biggest upsets and advanced to the last eight.
