Nigeria Congratulates Malawi on Inauguration of President Peter Mutharika

The Federal Government of Nigeria has extended heartfelt congratulations to the Government and people of the Republic of Malawi following the peaceful inauguration of President Peter Mutharika, who was sworn in as the country’s seventh president on Saturday, October 4, 2025, in Blantyre, Malawi’s commercial capital.

In an official statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, Nigeria praised the successful conduct of Malawi’s democratic electoral process, describing it as a “testament to the resilience of Malawi’s democratic institutions and the will of its people.”

“Nigeria commends the people of Malawi for their commitment to the principles of democracy, peaceful transition of power, and upholding the rule of law,” the statement read.

Nigeria Hails Peaceful Democratic Transition in Malawi

The peaceful transition and inauguration of President Mutharika were highlighted as a beacon of democratic stability in Africa. Nigeria emphasized its shared values with Malawi and reaffirmed its readiness to work closely with the new administration.

“As brothers and partners, Nigeria shares in the joy and optimism of this new chapter for the Republic of Malawi,” said the statement, signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry.

Strengthening Nigeria–Malawi Relations

Nigeria expressed confidence that under President Mutharika’s leadership, Malawi will continue to make strides in development, national unity, and prosperity.

The government also reiterated its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and Malawi, with a focus on key sectors such as Trade and investment, Agriculture, Education and Security cooperation.

These areas, according to the Ministry, are vital to the growth of both countries and align with broader goals for regional cooperation and African development.

“Nigeria looks forward to deepening cooperation in areas of mutual interest for the benefit of both our nations and the African continent as a whole,” the statement concluded.
