As the Nigerian Senate resumed plenary on Tuesday following a 10-week annual recess, Senate President Godswill Akpabio delivered a stirring address, calling on lawmakers to recommit to accountability, discipline, and purposeful governance.

Addressing his colleagues in the red chamber, Akpabio stressed that the 10th National Assembly must rise to meet the expectations of the Nigerian people.

“To the citizens of Nigeria, we hear you. You asked us not for excuses, but for results. We will remain accountable and responsive,” Akpabio declared.

‘Democracy Under Threat When the Legislature Is Undermined’

Akpabio issued a warning against efforts to weaken Nigeria’s legislative institutions, saying such actions strike at the heart of democracy.

“Those who seek to weaken the legislature seek to delete the structure of democracy itself,” he stated firmly.

He called on senators to prioritize competence over popularity in political appointments and legislative duties.

“Governance is a sacred duty of trust and not theatrics. Let us choose the right men for the service of our nation—not the loudest voices or those who seek office as an ornament, but those worthy of the people’s trust.”

Economic Outlook and Flood Disaster Response

On economic matters, Akpabio noted that Nigeria’s oil production is improving, and he credited the administration of President Bola Tinubu with stabilizing state-level finances.

“Today, no state governor is borrowing to pay salaries,” he claimed, emphasizing the importance of continued fiscal discipline in governance.

He also highlighted the flood disasters affecting multiple regions across the country, assuring affected communities that the Senate will prioritize relief and intervention efforts.

Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Returns to Senate

One of the notable moments at Tuesday’s plenary was the return of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central), who resumed duties after serving a six-month suspension.
