Pope Leo reaffirms: Only Christ redeems, Mary’s role is one of faithful cooperation

The Vatican has issued a new decree approved by Pope Leo, instructing Catholics to refrain from using certain devotional titles for Mary, the mother of Jesus — particularly “Co-redemptrix” and “Mediatrix.”

For centuries, Catholics have honored Mary through prayers and devotions, recognizing her unique role as the mother of Christ.

However, the Vatican’s latest directive clarifies that while Mary cooperated in Jesus’ redemptive mission, her participation was entirely subordinate to His.

“It is always inappropriate to use the title ‘Co-redemptrix’ to describe Mary’s cooperation,” the document states. “This expression risks overshadowing Christ’s singular role in salvation and distorting the truth of Christian doctrine.”

The decree further emphasizes that neither Mary nor the Church can add to or complete Christ’s redemptive work. Regarding the title “Mediatrix,” it notes that Scripture identifies Jesus as the sole mediator between God and humanity.

While Mary’s maternal support in Christ’s mission is acknowledged, the Church insists that her mediation occurred “in a clearly subordinate manner.”

This clarification aligns with previous papal teachings. Pope Francis, who had repeatedly rejected the term “co-redeemer,” once stated, “Christ is the Mediator, the bridge to the Father.

There are no co-redeemers with Him.” He also described efforts to elevate Mary to that status as “foolishness,” reaffirming that all prayers to God are offered “through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ.”

The Vatican’s latest decree reinforces the long-standing Catholic teaching that redemption is accomplished by Jesus Christ alone, while Mary’s role remains one of faithful cooperation and devotion, not equality in redemption.
