Former France defender Gaël Clichy has backed Bayern Munich forward Michael Olise to become one of the standout players of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, drawing comparisons with Kylian Mbappé’s rise to global stardom during France’s triumphant campaign.
Olise, who is preparing for his first World Cup appearance, heads into the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico with growing expectations after emerging as one of Europe’s most exciting attacking talents.
The 24-year-old has established himself as a key figure for both Bayern Munich and the French national team, and Clichy believes the global tournament could provide the perfect stage for him to announce himself to a wider audience.
“We knew Mbappé was a special talent before, but that World Cup was when he truly arrived,” Clichy told BBC Sport. “I hope Michael can do something similar this summer.”
Despite his impressive performances in the UEFA Champions League with Bayern Munich, Olise remains relatively new to the senior France setup. He has earned 16 caps for Les Bleus and is set to feature in his first major international tournament.
Clichy’s confidence in the winger stems from firsthand experience. The former Arsenal and Manchester City defender worked closely with Olise during the Paris Olympics, where he served as assistant coach under Thierry Henry for France’s Under-23 side.
Olise played a pivotal role as France reached the Olympic final and secured a silver medal, performances that further highlighted his growing influence on the international stage.
“I know how good he is and what a top person he is as well,” Clichy said. “If he brings the same level he has shown for Bayern Munich, then people will see he is one of the very best players France has.”
Clichy also singled out another emerging French talent, Rayan Cherki, as a player capable of making a significant impact at the World Cup.
The attacking midfielder, who also featured in France’s Olympic campaign, has continued his rapid development at club level and is regarded as one of the country’s brightest prospects.
“He’s an incredible talent,” Clichy said. “He has so much creative quality with both feet and never looks uncomfortable on the ball.”
With established stars such as Kylian Mbappé leading the squad and rising talents like Olise and Cherki pushing for greater recognition, France will once again enter the 2026 FIFA World Cup as one of the favourites to challenge for the trophy.
