A gas explosion in Sabon Wuse, Tafa Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State has left business owners reeling from massive losses after fire engulfed shops, vehicles, and food supplies.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) confirmed the incident, which occurred around 11 p.m. on Saturday, when a gas tanker exploded while offloading at a filling station.
Shockwaves and Panic as Fire Spreads
Eyewitnesses described the moment of the blast as terrifying, sending shockwaves through the community. The fire quickly spread, reaching a nearby petrol station, shops, and parked vehicles.
Musa Aliyu, a resident, recounted the chaos:
“The flames were so intense they could be seen from different parts of town. People ran out of their homes in fear. We thank Allah no lives were lost, but the destruction is overwhelming.”
Firefighters Arrive Late as Calls for Safety Grow
By the time firefighters arrived hours later, the damage had already been done. The incident has reignited concerns over safety regulations for gas and petrol stations, with residents urging authorities to enforce stricter measures to prevent similar disasters.
While no casualties were reported, the explosion underscores the dangers of handling flammable substances, prompting calls for better emergency response systems and stricter safety enforcement in high-risk areas.
