The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has launched a new Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) to strengthen the fight against armed robbery, kidnapping, violent attacks, and other serious crimes across the nation’s capital.
The unit was officially inaugurated on Monday at the former SARS Office located at Abattoir, Guzape Junction, Abuja, by the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi. The ceremony attracted traditional rulers, community leaders, senior police officers, and representatives of sister security agencies.
Speaking at the event, CP Sanusi said the establishment of the VCRU reflects the commitment of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to proactively address emerging security threats and improve public safety in the Federal Capital Territory.
According to him, the unit has been strategically divided into five operational sectors across the FCT to ensure wider coverage, faster response to incidents, enhanced intelligence gathering, and more effective deployment of resources. He noted that officers selected for the unit underwent rigorous screening and specialized training to prepare them for tackling violent crimes.
The police commissioner stressed that professionalism, discipline, accountability, and respect for human rights must guide the conduct of all personnel attached to the VCRU. He warned that misconduct, extortion, harassment, abuse of authority, and other unethical practices would attract strict sanctions.
Sanusi also called on residents to support security agencies through timely and credible information sharing, noting that sustainable security can only be achieved through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the public.
The FCT Police Command urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station or through its emergency lines: 08932003913 and 07057337653.
The launch of the VCRU is expected to bolster ongoing efforts to curb violent crime and enhance the safety of residents and visitors across the Federal Capital Territory.
