Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, on Tuesday disclosed that he brought his son to the protest ground to dispel claims that politicians promote demonstrations while keeping their families abroad.
Addressing protesters, Amaechi said his son’s presence was meant to counter the narrative that political leaders distance their loved ones from the consequences of protests.
“Some people say we politicians encourage protests while our children are overseas. This is my first son. I brought him to join the protest. He is a medical doctor, and his role is to treat anyone who may be injured if the need arises,” he said.
Amaechi explained that the decision was also symbolic, stressing that leaders should stand at the forefront of major national actions alongside their families.
According to him, it was a demonstration of personal conviction and preparedness should the protest turn violent.
He further called on Nigerians and opposition parties to take to the streets in protest against the Senate’s decision, insisting that resistance should not be left to a single group.
“I believe all opposition parties should come out, PDP, ADC, everybody, to protest against the attempt by one party. If we come out and they say the opposition has hijacked the protest, what is APC doing? Are they not hijacking? What are they afraid of?” Amaechi said.
He added that true political success is measured by public approval, noting that leaders can only assess their performance through the reactions of the people.
