Lassa Fever Spreads Across 14 State: Health Officials Intensify Surveillance

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed the death of a 31-year-old physician who succumbed to Lassa fever after returning from the United Kingdom. The fatality adds to the growing number of cases in the country, with 535 confirmed infections and 98 deaths recorded across 14 states as of March 2, 2025.

According to an NCDC advisory released on Sunday, the deceased doctor was diagnosed at a private health facility in Ondo State. He had traveled abroad on February 19 and returned to Nigeria on February 27. Suspecting Lassa fever, doctors collected samples on February 28, but he passed away on March 1 before the test results confirmed the infection on March 4.

The NCDC noted that Lassa fever, an acute viral hemorrhagic disease transmitted by rodents, is endemic in Nigeria. The outbreak has been particularly severe in five states—Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba, and Ebonyi—which account for 91% of confirmed cases. Ten local government areas, including Owo, Akure South, and Etsako West, contribute 68% of infections.

Authorities have intensified response efforts, including contact tracing and monitoring individuals who had close interactions with the deceased physician. Port Health Services are also tracking potential in-flight contacts.

Lassa fever symptoms often resemble malaria, with fever, weakness, nausea, and, in severe cases, internal bleeding. The NCDC has urged early detection and prompt medical intervention to improve survival rates.

Key Highlights of Nigeria’s Lassa Fever Outbreak:
Total Cases: 2,728 suspected, 535 confirmed
Deaths: 98 fatalities reported
Most Affected States: Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba, Ebonyi
Government Response: Contact tracing, enhanced surveillance, and public health interventions
The ongoing outbreak underscores the urgent need for improved infection control, early diagnosis, and public awareness to curb Lassa fever’s spread in Nigeria.
