The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has said it is closely monitoring developments in Belfast, Northern Ireland, following reports of unrest and isolated incidents affecting parts of the community.
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NIDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, called for peace and restraint, stressing that moments of tension should not be allowed to deepen divisions among residents.
“Whenever communities experience moments of tension, it is important that we do not allow isolated incidents to divide us, but rather strengthen our commitment to peace, dialogue, and mutual respect,” she said.
In a statement issued by NIDCOM’s Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Mr. Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the commission expressed concern over the disturbances and extended its sympathies to individuals and families affected by the situation.
The commission urged all residents to respect law and order and avoid actions capable of escalating tensions. It also commended community leaders and organisations working to promote unity and responsible engagement across affected communities.
NIDCOM noted ongoing appeals for cooperation with law enforcement agencies and efforts aimed at discouraging division and maintaining social harmony.
Speaking during a recent BBC interview, Nigerian community leader and founder of Multi-Ethnic Sports and Cultures Northern Ireland (MSCNI), Mr. Jahswill Emmanuel, described the situation as unfortunate and expressed condolences to victims and their families.
Mr. Emmanuel said migrant communities, including Nigerians, remain committed to making positive contributions to Northern Ireland. He urged residents to embrace unity and work together to preserve stability.
He also stressed the need for close collaboration with law enforcement authorities, warning that isolated incidents should not be allowed to undermine community relations or trigger further unrest.
NIDCOM reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare, dignity and safety of Nigerians living abroad, adding that it will continue to engage relevant stakeholders and closely monitor developments in Belfast in the interest of Nigerians in the diaspora.
