President Bola Tinubu has formally nominated Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election, ending months of speculation over a possible replacement.
The decision comes after weeks of uncertainty fueled by reports that political considerations ahead of the election could prompt the President to select a new vice-presidential candidate. Shettima’s position had come under scrutiny following the reluctance of some stakeholders within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), including members from the North-East, to publicly endorse him.
There had also been widespread speculation that Tinubu might opt for a northern Christian as his running mate in the 2027 presidential race.
However, the speculation has now been put to rest with the President’s formal renomination of Shettima.
The announcement was made by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, in a post on his verified X account.
According to Dare, Tinubu submitted his Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) nomination form to the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC as the party’s sole presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
He wrote: “About now, at the Continental Hotel, Abuja, President Tinubu submits INEC nomination form to the APC NWC as Sole Presidential Candidate for the 2027 Elections. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has equally tapped Kashim Shettima, the current Vice President and Senator, as his running mate for vice president in the 2027 election.”
