The 42nd Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council (MSC) at the Ambassadorial level officially opened today at the ECOWAS Commission Headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria, bringing together ambassadors, security experts, and political leaders from across West Africa.
The high-level meeting aims to deliberate on the region’s evolving peace, security, and governance issues, offering strategic recommendations to foster stability, good governance, and sustainable peace within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Speaking on behalf of the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, commended Member States for their unwavering commitment to the shared vision of a peaceful, democratic, and prosperous West Africa.
“Your steadfast contributions continue to shape the future of our region, and together, we can overcome the security challenges confronting our community,” Musah remarked.
Declaring the session open, H.E. Ambassador Musa Nuhu, Chair of the Mediation and Security Council and Permanent Representative of Nigeria to ECOWAS, reaffirmed the Council’s priority, stating, “Peace and security remain at the heart of our regional agenda, and this session is crucial in charting the path forward.”
Key agenda items include discussions on seven pivotal memoranda covering the region’s political landscape, current security developments, the operational framework of the ECOWAS Standby Force Logistics Concept, and policies governing the ECOWAS Logistics Depot.
The outcomes of this session are expected to play a significant role in shaping regional peace and security policies as West Africa continues to navigate complex political transitions, security threats, and efforts to strengthen democratic governance.
