Armed bandits have killed a prominent political figure in Zamfara State, Hon. Mu’azu Zannan Gwashi, despite receiving part of the ransom demanded for his release.
Gwashi had spent five months in captivity after being kidnapped during an attack on July 22, 2025.
The abduction occurred along the Manyaci–Bukkuyum road, where gunmen ambushed the convoy of PDP Chairman Hon. Muhammad Sala Wuta and others.
Wuta sustained gunshot injuries to his hand and leg, while three individuals, including Gwashi, were taken away by the attackers.
The kidnappers initially demanded N30 million, later reducing their demand to N15 million, which was paid.
However, they still refused to release Gwashi, insisting on an additional N15 million. Despite negotiations, he was eventually killed by his captors.
Security analyst Malam Bakatsine wrote on X that the kidnappers constantly shifted their demands, describing the incident as a tragic reflection of the persistent cycle of extortion in the region.
The news of Gwashi’s death has drawn widespread grief from residents and social media users who offered prayers and condolences.
Zamfara State continues to grapple with recurring attacks and kidnappings across multiple local government areas, as banditry remains a major security threat despite continued military operations.
