Ibadan Polytechnic: 10 Students Hospitalized After Classroom Fight

At least 10 students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, were hospitalized on Tuesday after inhaling a toxic substance released during a fight in their lecture hall.

The Oyo State Government responded promptly to the emergency after receiving a distress call, with Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, leading an immediate intervention. The affected students, mostly from the Science Laboratory and Technology Department, were rushed to Ring Road State Hospital and the University College Hospital for treatment.

Eyewitnesses reported that the incident occurred after a fight broke out between two students following a course test. During the scuffle, an unidentified individual allegedly sprayed a choking substance into the air, causing several students to collapse, with some losing consciousness.

Dr. Ajetunmobi confirmed that all affected students had been stabilized and were receiving proper medical care. She urged the institution’s management to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure those responsible face justice. She also emphasized the need for awareness programs to curb violence and reckless behavior among students.

The Rector of The Polytechnic, Dr. Taiwo, commended the government’s swift action and assured that disciplinary measures would be taken against those involved.
