The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has launched a Regional Social Protection Framework and Operational Plan aimed at strengthening social protection systems across the region.
The launch took place on September 11, 2025, during a high-level hybrid workshop at the ECOWAS Headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria, organized by the ECOWAS Department of Human Development and Social Affairs in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNICEF, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the European Union (EU), and other development partners.
The framework is designed to guide ECOWAS Member States in expanding social protection systems, improving access to essential services, and promoting greater social inclusion. The event also featured the presentation of the 2025–2026 biennial work plan, which outlines practical steps for implementation across the region.
According to the ECOWAS Commission, the initiative underscores its commitment to building more resilient and inclusive societies by addressing poverty, inequality, and vulnerability in line with global development agendas.
