In a swift and coordinated diplomatic effort, the Nigerian Mission in Luanda, Angola, under the directive of the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has successfully facilitated the timely return of the Super Eagles to Uyo ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic.

The national team’s travel was unexpectedly disrupted when their aircraft developed a cracked windscreen during a refueling stop in Luanda. Responding to the urgent situation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs activated its diplomatic channels to ensure the seamless arrival of a replacement aircraft and the team’s continued journey.

Through rapid lobbying and coordinated outreach, the Nigerian Mission secured vital overflight and landing permits from five countries — Angola, Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. These approvals enabled the replacement aircraft to fly without delay, ensuring the Super Eagles could return home safely and prepare for the high-stakes fixture.

Ministry officials confirmed that Ambassador Tuggar personally oversaw the operation, working closely with Senator Abdul Ningi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports; Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission; and regional aviation and diplomatic authorities to expedite the process.

“Our priority was clear — to ensure that our national team returned home safely and on time,” a senior ministry official stated. “This is diplomacy in action, serving the national interest beyond politics.”

The swift intervention has earned praise across sports and diplomatic circles, viewed as a strong example of government responsiveness and inter-agency collaboration.

Meanwhile, the Benin Republic national team has already arrived in Uyo, setting the stage for Tuesday’s crucial encounter. With the Super Eagles now en route and expected to arrive safely, focus returns to the pitch as Nigeria continues its push for qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
