Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor has defended her portrayal of villainous characters in films, saying the roles are intended to expose social problems rather than reflect her real-life personality.

The 67-year-old actress, popularly known as “Mama G”, made the remarks during a recent video chat while addressing a long-standing perception among some viewers that her on-screen characters accurately represent who she is off-screen.

Ozokwor, one of Nollywood’s most recognisable faces, said many people mistakenly assume she is harsh or wicked because of the antagonistic roles she has played throughout her career.

She explained that her performances as strict mothers, overbearing in-laws and other controversial characters are carefully crafted to highlight societal issues that are often overlooked.

“I feel bold to expose the ills in society. Those things happen and nobody wants to expose them. I am exposing them,” she said.

The actress stressed that the behaviours she portrays in films should not be confused with her personal character, describing acting as a profession that uses storytelling to provoke reflection and discussion.

“I am not like that, but I expose it. I am extremely proud of myself and Mama G lovers are proud of me,” she added.

Ozokwor said she is encouraged by fans who understand the deeper messages behind her performances, noting that her work is aimed at shedding light on harmful attitudes and practices within society.

Over a career spanning decades, the award-winning actress has become synonymous with powerful portrayals of complex and often controversial characters, earning her a lasting place in Nigeria’s film industry.
