Experienced Salvadoran referee Ivan Barton has been appointed to officiate the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final between France and Spain, FIFA has announced.

The world football governing body confirmed the appointment in a post on its official X account ahead of the blockbuster last-four clash at Dall

“The match officials for FIFA World Cup Match 101 have been appointed,” FIFA said.

Barton will take charge of the high-profile encounter, with kick-off scheduled for 3:00 p.m. EDT.

He will be assisted by fellow Salvadoran David Moran as Assistant Referee 1, while Argentina’s Antonio Pupiro has been named Assistant Referee 2.

Sweden’s Glenn Nyberg will serve as the fourth official, with compatriot Mahbod Beigi appointed reserve assistant referee.

The appointment hands Barton one of the tournament’s biggest matches as two European heavyweights battle for a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

France reached the semi-finals after another impressive campaign, combining defensive resilience with attacking quality. Led by captain Kylian Mbappé, Les Bleus are chasing another appearance in the World Cup final.

Spain have also emerged among the tournament’s standout teams, with teenage star Lamine Yamal playing a key role in their run. The former world champions have impressed with their possession-based football, youthful squad and clinical finishing.

The semi-final also renews one of European football’s fiercest rivalries. The winner will secure a place in the World Cup final, while the defeated side will play in the third-place play-off.

France and Spain last met at the FIFA World Cup in the Round of 16, where France came from behind to win 3-1. More recently, Spain defeated France 2-1 in the UEFA Euro semi-final before going on to lift the European title.

With a place in the final at stake, the clash is expected to showcase France’s experience against Spain’s exciting new generation.
