Amid a surge of high-profile defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has called on party members not to lose hope, assuring them that the party’s current challenges are only temporary and that victory lies ahead.

Makinde made the statement on Monday during the inauguration of the PDP National Convention Transportation Subcommittee in Abuja, which he chairs, ahead of the party’s elective national convention scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

“This is not the time to despair. This is the moment when new, authentic heroes will be made—not just for the PDP, but for Nigeria,” he declared.

Defections Continue Ahead of 2027 General Elections

The PDP has in recent months experienced significant setbacks, with several senior members leaving the party. Among them are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark, and ex-presidential aspirant Dele Momodu, who have reportedly aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led opposition coalition.

Meanwhile, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has welcomed key PDP figures such as Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno, Delta Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and former Vice-Presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa.

There is also speculation that Enugu Governor Peter Mbah and Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri may defect to the APC ahead of the PDP convention next month.

Makinde: ‘We’ve Been Here Before, and We’ll Rebuild’

In his address, Makinde likened the current political turbulence to past phases of party realignment, asserting that PDP remains the only party with national spread and staying power.

“They can say PDP is not everywhere, but PDP is in every ward of this country,” he said.
“We’ve always been a constant factor—from when democracy returned in 1999. Whether as the ruling party or as the main opposition, we’re not going anywhere.”

Makinde appealed to members to “hold their own corner” for the PDP, assuring them that the difficult phase is a prelude to a stronger, more united party prepared for national leadership in 2027.

“It may look like it’s getting worse, but when you want something that will endure, it usually gets worse before it gets better,” he added.

Makinde Confident in Leadership to Emerge at Convention

The governor urged party faithful to trust in the leadership that will emerge from the Ibadan convention, stating that capable individuals will be chosen to rebuild the party and rescue Nigeria from its current political and economic crises.

“Trust the leadership we will enthrone. Every role you play, no matter how small, contributes to our comeback story,” he said.

Makinde also reflected on his previous role as Secretary of the PDP National Convention Organising Committee in 2021, describing his new appointment as Chairman of the Transportation Subcommittee as another opportunity to serve the party selflessly.

“Whether you’re in a big or small role, see this as a special sacrifice for PDP’s return to national relevance,” he said.

Transportation Subcommittee Key to Convention Success

Makinde emphasized the importance of logistics in ensuring a smooth and successful national convention, explaining that the subcommittee’s work goes far beyond simply moving delegates.

“Our task starts before the delegates leave their homes. The success of the convention depends on the efficiency of our logistics,” he stressed.
