Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, has expelled a student, Goddy-Mbakwe Chimamaka Precious, for physically assaulting a lecturer from the Department of Theatre and Film Studies.
The university announced the expulsion in a statement on Friday, signed by Acting Registrar Victor Modebelu. According to the statement, the decision followed a disciplinary review by the Student Disciplinary Committee, which found the student guilty of gross misconduct under Regulation 4 (SDR) of the institution’s disciplinary code.
“The Acting Vice-Chancellor has received the report from the Student Disciplinary Committee regarding your assault on a lecturer from the Department of Theatre and Film Studies, which was deemed a serious violation of university regulations,” the statement read.
“As a result, the Vice-Chancellor, acting on behalf of the University Senate, has approved the committee’s recommendation for your expulsion. This decision takes immediate effect. You are required to vacate the university premises and return any university property in your possession.”
The incident gained widespread attention after a viral video surfaced online, showing Precious allegedly attacking Dr. Chukwudi Okoye, a faculty member in the department. The university’s decision underscores its zero-tolerance policy on violence and misconduct within the academic community.
