Veteran actress and singer Toyin Adewale has opened up about how music star Davido played a crucial role in launching the career of her son, Mayorkun.
Speaking on the early days of Mayorkun’s rise to fame, Adewale explained that the breakthrough happened unexpectedly when the singer visited a cousin in Lekki and spent time in a music studio. While there, he recorded a cover of Davido’s song “Give Me the Money” and shared it on Instagram without anticipating the massive response it would receive.
According to her, the cover quickly gained traction online and eventually caught Davido’s attention. The family was initially skeptical when a message allegedly from the award-winning singer arrived, fearing it could be a scam. However, their doubts disappeared once they recognized his voice during a phone conversation.
Adewale revealed that Davido immediately showed interest in Mayorkun’s talent, requesting his measurements before sending him a large box of gifts. The gesture left the family pleasantly surprised and strengthened their confidence that the opportunity was genuine.
She further disclosed that Mayorkun and a close friend were later invited to Davido’s residence, where they met the singer in person. Describing the encounter, Adewale said Davido was warm, respectful, and welcoming, constantly addressing her as “Mummy” throughout their interactions.
The actress added that the relationship soon developed into a professional collaboration. During a subsequent visit, Mayorkun entered the studio and recorded what would later become his breakout hit, “Eleko,” a song that marked the beginning of his successful journey in the Nigerian music industry.
The revelation offers fresh insight into how a simple cover song, social media exposure, and Davido’s support helped transform Mayorkun from an aspiring artist into one of Afrobeats’ most celebrated stars.
