To ease overcrowding in Adamawa State’s correctional facilities, the Jail Delivery Committee (JDC), led by Chief Judge, Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman, has released fifty-seven inmates and granted bail to twenty-nine others at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Jimeta.
The initiative, part of the committee’s ongoing prison decongestion efforts, also resulted in the conviction of fifty-two individuals and the downward review of three pending cases. The Jimeta facility, with a maximum capacity of 300 inmates, is currently accommodating 339, highlighting a significant overcrowding challenge.
With the latest exercise, a total of 141 inmates have benefited from the committee’s interventions. Following the proceedings, Justice Abdulrahman urged the released inmates to maintain good conduct and avoid activities that could lead them back into trouble.
She also expressed her gratitude to her team and the custodial centre’s management for their cooperation during the exercise.
One of the beneficiaries, Haggai Audi, who spoke on behalf of the released inmates, thanked the committee and pledged to lead better lives. He also wished Justice Abdulrahman continued success and future elevation.
Contributing to the effort, Motunrayo Anibaba, state coordinator of the Public-Private Development Centre (PPDC), a social advocacy group known as “Know Your Rights,” revealed that her organization covered the compensation fees for four inmates.
Anibaba stated that PPDC has allocated one million Naira to assist inmates facing fines in civil-related cases. She commended Justice Abdulrahman and her team for the exercise and praised the strong collaboration between her organization and the judiciary.
