Presidential Spokesperson Hon. Sunday Akin Dare has reaffirmed the crucial role of civil society in strengthening democracy and fostering national development. He made this assertion on February 14, 2025, while hosting the leadership of the National Civil Society Council of Nigeria (NCSCN), led by Executive Director Blessing A. Akinlosotu, at his office.
Dare emphasized the historic impact of collaboration between the media and civil society organizations (CSOs), noting their instrumental role in Nigeria’s transition from military rule to democracy. He stressed that this alliance remains essential for promoting democratic values and national unity.
“If the combined force of the media and organized civil society community could dislodge a military government from Nigeria, how much more can it achieve in influencing national unity and development?” Dare remarked.
He urged civil society groups to embrace their role as watchdogs and partners in governance, calling for fact-based advocacy and transparency to prevent political manipulation.
In response, NCSCN Executive Director Blessing Akinlosotu commended Dare for his unwavering dedication to social activism and democratic growth in Nigeria. He highlighted the council’s commitment to partnering with the government to strengthen democracy, hold leaders accountable, and champion citizens’ rights.
The meeting also had in attendance key NCSCN delegates, including Mr. Charles Ibiang (National Director, Petroleum and Natural Resources, South-South), Alhaji Gambo Suleiman Jagindi (National Director, Media & Publicity, North-West), Hajia Hadiza Garba Ibrahim (National Director, Gender & Girl Child Affairs, North-East), and Mazi Oscar David Kalu (National Director, Programmes & Organizations, South-East).
The visit reaffirmed the council’s dedication to deepening democracy in Nigeria through strategic engagement with government institution.
