The 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon saw yet another dominant performance from East African athletes, with Kenya’s Edwin Kibet emerging victorious in the men’s category and Ethiopia’s Guta Meseret Hirpa claiming the women’s title.
Kibet crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 14 minutes, and 6 seconds, securing the $50,000 prize. This marks his second victory in the competition, having previously won in 2023. Last year, he finished third behind compatriot Bernard Sang, who clocked 2:16:49 to win the 2024 edition.
Meanwhile, Guta Meseret Hirpa made history with her first win in the Lagos City Marathon, completing the 42km race in 2 hours, 37 minutes, and 4 seconds.
The marathon, which began at Western Avenue in front of the National Stadium, Surulere, and concluded at Eko Atlantic City, Victoria Island, attracted thousands of participants.
Recognized as a Gold Label Road Race by World Athletics in 2023, the Lagos City Marathon continues to grow in prominence, drawing elite long-distance runners from around the world.
