Leaders of West Africa will gather in Accra, Ghana, on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, to officially kick off the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the region’s leading intergovernmental organization.
The announcement was made in a statement by ECOWAS Principal Officer for Information and Communication, Mr. Joel AHOFODJI.
Established on May 28, 1975, in Lagos, Nigeria, ECOWAS has grown to become one of Africa’s most effective regional blocs, credited with fostering economic integration, promoting peace and security, and advancing development across its 15 Member States.
The Golden Jubilee celebrations in Accra will feature a series of commemorative events, including the unveiling of the official anniversary logo and theme. Attendees will also witness vibrant cultural performances and artistic displays that reflect ECOWAS’ journey—from its founding moments and key institutional reforms to the successes that have shaped its legacy over the past five decades.
The milestone is expected to serve not only as a celebration of achievements but also a reflection point on the future of regional cooperation in West Africa.
