The Kogi East Political and Economic Summit Group (KEPESG), a coalition of civil society organisations within the Kogi East Senatorial District, has formally endorsed Jibrin Isah Echocho for a third term in the National Assembly.
Addressing journalists during a world press conference held in Abuja, the Convener of the group Comrade Okpanachi Jacob, described its decision for endorsement as the outcome of extensive consultations and a thorough assessment of the political and economic realities of the district.
Comrade Jacob noted that the group has consistently played a role in shaping public opinion and influencing political direction in Kogi East through advocacy, constructive engagement, and policy-driven dialogue.
KEPESG stated that its endorsement of Senator Echocho was rooted in historical and contemporary political considerations. It observed that Kogi East had consistently produced the Governor of Kogi State until 2015, but has since experienced a decline in political influence following the shift of power to the Central Senatorial District.
According to Comrade Jacob, this development highlights the need to strengthen representation at the national level as a strategic alternative for advancing the interests of the district.
“Returning Senator Jibrin Isah Echocho for another term is a critical pathway to rebuilding our political relevance and promoting the socio-economic development of our people,” the group said.
KEPESG emphasized that the senator’s legislative experience and growing national influence position him to attract greater opportunities and deliver effective representation.
The group outlined several factors that informed its decision, including the potential for enhanced national representation, improved chances of securing principal leadership positions in the National Assembly, and the need to bridge the political gap created by the district’s absence from the governorship since 2015.
It also highlighted the importance of self-determination, noting that the endorsement provides an opportunity for the people of Kogi East to shape their political future without external imposition.
KEPESG further stressed the need for continuity, stating that a third term would enable Senator Echocho to consolidate ongoing reforms and developmental initiatives.
The group called on residents of Kogi East to reject what it described as “politics of surrogacy” and resist attempts to impose candidates who do not align with the aspirations of the people.
It also urged political parties to prioritise competence, experience, and proven capacity in candidate selection, warning against the emergence of inexperienced politicians that could reverse existing gains.
While maintaining its nonpartisan stance, Comrade Jacob reaffirmed KEPESG’s commitment to supporting credible leaders across party lines who demonstrate a genuine commitment to the development of Kogi East.
The statement was jointly signed by Convener, Comrade Okpanachi Jacob; Secretary, Comrade Friday James Onuh; and other members of the group.
