A vigilante member has been killed after gunmen attacked Wereng-Rim community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, residents and a youth group have said.
The victim, identified as Mangai Musa, 43, was reportedly shot dead when armed men stormed the community.
A resident, Tok Abel, told journalist that the attackers opened fire shortly after arriving in the area before fleeing the scene.
“The gunmen stormed the community, opened fire, killing the vigilante member before escaping,” he said.
He added that the attack caused panic among residents, many of whom fled their homes for safety.
The Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) also confirmed the incident in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong.
The association described the killing as another in a series of attacks affecting communities in Riyom Local Government Area.
“The Berom Youth Moulders Association has received the report of another fatal attack on a Berom native in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State,” the statement said.
It added: “Information available to the association indicates that Mr Mangai Musa, 43, from Wereng-Rim community, was shot dead.”
The group said the circumstances surrounding the attack were still under investigation.
Efforts to obtain a response from the spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
