The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed deep disappointment over the defection of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a betrayal of the mandate given to him by the PDP and the people of Enugu State.
Speaking on a television Interview on Wednesday, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said while every politician has the right to make personal decisions, such actions come with political consequences.
“The PDP is utterly disappointed by those actions, having regard to what we know behind the scenes. But having said that, people have a right to decide what they want to do; the consequences can follow,” Ologunagba stated.
PDP Accuses Internal Saboteurs of Undermining the Party
Ologunagba also hinted at the presence of “moles” within the PDP—individuals who, according to him, are actively working to undermine the party’s unity and progress from within.
“There are some people from within our fold who continue to undermine the party and its progress. We recognise that, but we are dealing with that,” he said.
He compared the situation to trying to remove a “madman in a China shop”, emphasizing the need for strategic, methodical action in responding to internal party crises.
All Eyes on PDP National Convention in Ibadan
Despite the setback, the PDP says it is moving forward with plans for its National Convention, scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November 2025. Ologunagba said the convention will serve as a turning point for the opposition party.
“We are going to go to Ibadan, coming out victoriously with a brand new National Working Committee that will continue to steer the affairs of the party,” he said.
“You must have a party before you can talk about candidates. So, that’s what we want to do — create a very solid foundation, find the people who have character, integrity, and capacity and courage to run the affairs of the party so that Nigerians can then have a choice.”
PDP Urges Governors to Uphold Opposition Mandate
The party also used the opportunity to urge serving PDP governors to stay true to their roles as opposition leaders entrusted with political power by voters seeking alternatives to the APC-led government.
“As a party, we are focused on the Nigerian people; we don’t want to put too much premium on individuals,” Ologunagba said. “It is not based on individuals; it is based on the people, and that is our strength.”
