The Nigerian Correctional Service in Yobe State has declared an inmate wanted after he escaped following a road accident involving a vehicle transporting prisoners from Potiskum to Damaturu.
The Command’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Adamu, confirmed that the incident occurred on April 13 during an inmate transfer operation, when the prison vehicle was involved in a crash.
In a statement, the Service said the escapee fled amid the confusion that followed the accident.
“The general public is hereby notified that the Nigerian Correctional Service, Yobe State Command, has confirmed the escape of an inmate from the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Potiskum,” the statement read.
It explained that efforts were ongoing to rescue victims of the accident when the inmate took advantage of the situation to escape.
“The unfortunate incident occurred while efforts were being made to rescue affected accident victims. The individual managed to flee the scene during the confusion,” the statement added.
The escaped inmate has been identified as Dahiru Mohammed, 30, a native of Askiwari village via Tarmuwa. He was admitted into custody on November 29, 2024, with prison number J/1539/24.
Authorities described him as dangerous and warned members of the public to avoid any contact with him, urging anyone with useful information to report to the nearest security agency.
