The United Kingdom has imposed fresh sanctions on a Nigeria-linked entity as part of a new package targeting networks accused of supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine.
In a statement on Tuesday, the UK Government announced 70 new sanctions aimed at disrupting Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet”, military procurement supply chains and illicit financial networks allegedly used to evade existing international restrictions.
Among those sanctioned is Pilot Finance, also known as Continental Global Incentives, which British authorities said is linked to sanctions evasion activities in Nigeria.
The sanctions also target third-country suppliers of military goods to Russia and financial actors accused of facilitating transactions connected to the Kremlin.
British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Gill Lever, said the measures were designed to further weaken Russia’s ability to sustain its military campaign in Ukraine.
“Today, the UK announced 70 new sanctions aimed at further constraining the Kremlin’s networks and its ability to prosecute its illegal war against Ukraine,” Lever said.
She explained that the sanctions focus on Russia’s shadow fleet, military procurement chains linked to Russian military intelligence, and wider illicit finance networks involved in sanctions evasion and political interference.
“This includes the designation of an entity, Pilot Finance, also known as Continental Global Incentives, linked to sanctions evasion activity in Nigeria,” she added.
Lever warned that organisations facilitating illicit financial transactions undermine the integrity of global financial systems and expose countries to significant reputational risks.
“Our message is clear: we will continue to close loopholes, disrupt illicit networks, and restrict the resources enabling the Kremlin’s aggression,” she said.
The latest measures form part of ongoing efforts by the UK and its allies to increase economic pressure on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine, while seeking to prevent individuals and organisations from helping Moscow circumvent international sanctions.
