The Delta State Police Command has arrested an Asaba-based content creator, Ifeanyi Ogbonna, popularly known as “Odogwu of Asaba”, over allegations that he raped and assaulted a 20-year-old woman who later died.
Police said the arrest followed a petition alleging that the young woman travelled to Asaba last month after Ogbonna allegedly invited her to participate in a content creation training programme he advertised on his social media platforms.
According to the police, the suspect allegedly accommodated the woman in a hotel, where she was raped and physically assaulted. Investigators said the woman later returned home traumatised and informed her parents about the alleged incident.
The Command further stated that before her death, the woman recorded a video in which she recounted the alleged assault and the emotional distress she suffered afterwards. Police said she later consumed a toxic substance in an apparent suicide attempt and died despite efforts to save her.
Confirming the arrest, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, said the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, ordered an immediate investigation after receiving the petition.
“Upon receipt of the petition, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, directed the Area Command Effurun to carry out an immediate and thorough investigation into the allegations,” Edafe said.
He added: “Acting on the directive, operatives of the Command swiftly commenced an investigation, leading to the arrest of Ifeanyi Ogbonna, also known as ‘Odogwu of Asaba’.”
Edafe said the suspect made “useful statements” during preliminary questioning, adding that detectives are continuing investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.
He also quoted the Commissioner of Police as assuring the deceased’s family and the public that the investigation would be thorough.
“The case will be thoroughly investigated and no aspect of the allegations will be overlooked,” the commissioner said.
The police have not announced any formal charges against the suspect, and investigations remain ongoing.
