Four people are killed and one injured in a road crash along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
The fatal crash occurs around near Straight Gate School, Ipara Remo.
The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says eight people are involved in the crash.
Four male adults die, while another male adult sustains injuries. Three others escape unhurt.
The crash involves a blue Mitsubishi Canter with registration number FGE 753 XA and an ash-coloured HOWO truck with registration number T-695 KT.
According to the FRSC, the Mitsubishi driver is travelling at high speed and crashes into the moving HOWO truck while attempting to overtake.
The agency also identifies fatigue as a contributing factor.
Chief Route Commander Afolabi Odunsi, FRSC Ogun State spokesperson, says the preliminary investigation points to speeding and wrongful overtaking as the main causes.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that the crash was caused by speed violation (SPV) and wrong overtaking (WOV),” Odunsi says.
He adds that the driver was reportedly fatigued during the journey.
The FRSC rescue team responds to the incident and arrives at the scene within six minutes of receiving the report.
The injured victim is taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased are deposited at FOS Mortuary, Ipara.
The damaged vehicles are handed over to the Police Motor Traffic Division, Isara, for further investigation.
The Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urges motorists to avoid speeding, fatigue and dangerous overtaking, particularly during early-morning journeys.
He advises drivers to rest adequately before embarking on long-distance trips and to overtake only when it is safe and permitted.
