Veteran Nollywood actor Olu Jacobs has died at the age of 84. His death was announced on Instagram by his son, Olusoji Jacobs.
The family described the actor as “The Lion of Lufodo” and said he lived a life of gratitude and purpose.
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo,” Olusoji wrote.
The family also appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect their privacy as they mourn the actor.
“We call on all bloggers and social media influencers to respect our family’s privacy at this time,” he added.
Jacobs was born in 1942 and built a career spanning more than five decades in Britain and Nigeria.
He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London before appearing in British television productions including The Goodies and The Professionals, as well as international films.
He returned to Nigeria in the 1980s and became one of the leading figures in the emerging Nigerian film industry.
Jacobs became widely known for portraying traditional rulers, authoritative figures and father characters, earning a reputation as one of Nollywood’s most respected actors.
He and his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, also co-founded Lufodo Group, a media and performing arts company involved in developing creative talent.
In 2021, Silva disclosed that Jacobs had been diagnosed with Dementia with Lewy Bodies, a progressive neurological condition.
She had previously spoken about the challenges the diagnosis posed for Jacobs and the family.
“It’s been hard on him because he doesn’t understand everything that is going on, and hard on the family,” Silva said in a television interview.
“I miss the times we worked together, but we remain deeply grateful for every clear, beautiful moment we have.”
Jacobs received the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.
He also received the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.
