Egypt secured a confidence-boosting 2–1 victory over Nigeria in a pre-Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) friendly held in Cairo on Tuesday, with Mostafa Mohamed’s second-half goal sealing the win.
The hosts took the lead just before the half-hour mark when Mahmoud Saber tapped in at the back post after a precise setup from Zizo, who repeatedly troubled Nigeria’s defense down the right flank.
Nigeria struggled to create clear chances but came close to equalising when Paul Onuachu’s long ball forced defender Yasser Ibrahim into an almost own goal, saved sharply by Egyptian goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy.
The Super Eagles eventually drew level shortly after halftime. Zaidu Sanusi’s free kick from the left was fumbled by El Shenawy at his near post, allowing Chidozie Awaziem to react quickest and head the ball into the net.
Egypt regained the lead after the break through Mostafa Mohamed, who finished clinically inside the box following another incisive move orchestrated by Zizo.
Nigeria were unable to respond, and Egypt comfortably held on to claim the win, capping an encouraging final tune-up ahead of AFCON.
Looking ahead, Egypt open their AFCON campaign against Zimbabwe on Monday, while Nigeria face Tanzania a day later.
