In a move aimed at strengthening higher education in Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu has appointed Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia, Kaduna State.
The appointment, announced on Monday, also includes key leadership roles within the university. Prof. Qurix Williams Barnabas will serve as Vice Chancellor, Sanusi Gambo Adamu as Registrar, Ibrahim Dalhat as Bursar, and Prof. Daniel Abubakar as University Librarian.
Additionally, President Tinubu approved the selection of Mr. Thomas Etuh (North Central), Chief Fabian Nwaora (South East), Prof. Femi Taiwo (South West), and Zarah Bukar (North East) as members of the university’s Governing Council.
According to the presidency, these appointments were made based on the individuals’ distinguished careers, leadership acumen, and dedication to advancing Nigeria’s educational sector.
President Tinubu urged the new appointees to bring their expertise to bear in positioning the university as a center for academic excellence and innovation, in line with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He emphasized the need for visionary leadership as the institution prepares to admit its first batch of students in September 2025.
The Federal University of Applied Sciences, formerly known as Nok University, was recently taken over by the federal government, leading to its renaming and restructuring.
