The Rivers State Police Command has officially confirmed the transfer of the case involving the tragic killing of Godwin Akpakpan, a 300-level Computer Science student of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a discreet and comprehensive investigation.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed this development to Channels Television on Monday, assuring the public that efforts are underway in collaboration with other security agencies to ensure justice is served.
“The case has been transferred to SCID for discrete investigation, and a panel has been set up by the military with a representative of all service commanders in attendance on the matter,” Iringe-Koko stated.
UNIPORT Demands Justice for Slain Student
In reaction to the incident, the management of the University of Port Harcourt has called for an immediate and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Akpakpan’s death. In an official statement signed by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Sam Kpenu, the institution expressed profound sorrow over the loss and described Akpakpan as a valued member of the university community.
“The University is actively engaging with relevant security authorities to fully understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. We expect that a thorough investigation will be conducted and that appropriate actions will be taken in line with justice and the rule of law,” the statement read.
The statement further urged students and staff to remain calm and allow law enforcement agencies to carry out their investigation without interference.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this very difficult time,” the university said, reaffirming its commitment to the safety and well-being of all members of the academic community.
