A grassroots mobilisation group, Ekiti/Ondo Atiku Movement, has deplored the call by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on the Peoples Democratic Party National Chairman, Dr Iyochia Ayu, to vacate his seat, saying the position was not supported by fact nor predicated on reason.

The group’s Publicity Secretary, Dr Ade Ajepe, who said the governor only expressed his personal opinion, added, “There was nowhere South West PDP members debated and jointly took a decision to revolt on the national executive committee, which passed a vote of confidence in the national working committee of the party”.

Ajepe, in a statement in Ado Ekiti on Saturday, titled, “We say no to Gov. Makinde’s calls for removal of PDP national chairman,” spoke in reaction to the Oyo State governor’s statement that, “We are asking the National Chairman to step down so that the South will be fully included.”

The leadership of the movement, rising from a meeting on Friday, said although, “South-West is interested in chairmanship of the party, but not through back stabbing or dagger drawn or back door as being championed by Governor Makinde and his co-travellers, who are obviously mainly outside the South-West Zone.

“When the position of chairman was zoned to the South-West, those masquerading as the defenders of the region now, for selfish reasons collaborated and colluded with a South-South governor to hijack the position to Rivers State,” the group stated.

It however, urged Ayu, “to ignore the distractions and continue to have a good work as attested to by party NEC and as well reach out to all party men and women across the country and unite all for the task ahead.”

According to Ajepe, the group also endorsed the position of the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and as well lauded Ayu’s “unalloyed support, loyalty and commitment, to the party’s constitution.

“As a party, we must follow the path of constitutionalism, rules and regulations, party convention, practices and principles on all matters including this one,” the group stated.

Ajepe, who said that the group’s expectation was landslide victory for PDP in next year’s general elections, called on all members in the South-West to, “come together to mobilise support for our candidate and ensure his victory in February 2023 presidential election.”
