The House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on Oil Spill Clean-Up Funds has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring transparency, accountability, and justice in the management of funds earmarked for environmental remediation in the Niger Delta.

Chairman of the committee, Hon. Okpolupm Etteh, gave the assurance during an investigative hearing on the use of funds allocated to the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) and other related environmental interventions.

“Our goal is to uncover the truth behind how these funds have been used and ensure affected communities receive the justice and relief they deserve,” Etteh stated.

Probe to Assess Contract Transparency and Agency Performance

According to Hon. Etteh, the probe will not only track fund utilization but also assess the performance of regulatory agencies, transparency in contract awards, and the status of remediation projects already financed by the federal government and its development partners.

He emphasized that all committee proceedings will be duly recorded and that all witnesses must present truthful testimonies, original documentation, and verifiable evidence of work done.

Committee Urges Full Cooperation from Stakeholders

The committee chairman called on all relevant government agencies and institutions involved in the oil spill clean-up process to cooperate fully by submitting accurate and timely information to support the investigation.

Etteh also commended civil society organisations, community leaders, and technical partners for their sustained advocacy toward achieving environmental justice in the Niger Delta region.

“This investigation is not about witch-hunting any person or institution. It is to strengthen governance, promote accountability, and prevent future mismanagement of public resources,” the Speaker noted.

Call for Stronger Collaboration and Impactful Outcomes

The Speaker further emphasized the need for improved coordination between federal agencies and community-based organizations to ensure the oil spill remediation projects translate into tangible benefits for the communities, job creation for youths in the region, improved livelihoods, and the restoration of the Niger Delta ecosystem.
