The Brigade Commander serving in Damboa, General Uba, has been confirmed dead following an encounter with ISWAP militants, just hours after he was initially declared missing during an operation in the forest.
According to military sources, the senior officer had earlier sent a video message assuring colleagues that he was safe.
In the clip, he appeared calm and unharmed, but officials now confirm it was recorded before his situation took a drastic turn.
Reports say that General Uba later became disoriented while navigating the dense forest terrain, prompting an urgent search involving both ground troops and air support. At one point, he informed his team that he was heading back to base, giving hope that he would soon be recovered.
However, following widespread reports of his disappearance, ISWAP militants reportedly intercepted him again. His death was confirmed shortly after.
The Army had earlier issued a statement claiming the commander had safely returned to base, an assertion now contradicted by emerging details surrounding the incident.
His death has raised fresh concerns about the protection of frontline personnel and the accuracy of official military communication, particularly during high-risk operations in conflict zones.
