President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that the construction of a new National Headquarters Annex for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is more than just a physical structure, but a national investment in democracy, transparency, and public trust.
Speaking during the official launch of the project in Abuja, Tinubu described INEC as the backbone of Nigeria’s democratic journey, with its credibility and capacity being essential to free, fair, and trusted elections.
“INEC’s role in safeguarding our democratic process cannot be overstated. It is only fitting that such a pivotal institution is housed in a facility that mirrors its responsibility and significance,” Tinubu stated.
The President emphasized that the new complex will not only function as an administrative hub but also serve as a strategic centre for planning, training, innovation, and technological advancement in electoral processes.
Tinubu issued a clear directive to all contractors, engineers, and supervising agencies involved in the project: deliver quality, uphold timelines, and maintain integrity throughout the construction process.
“You are not just building an edifice; you are building public confidence in our democracy,” he declared.
The President also commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for what he described as a pivotal role in driving the project forward. He hailed the effort as a practical step towards fortifying Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
He called on Nigerians to stay vigilant and committed to defending the democratic values enshrined in the constitution, adding, “Democracy is not a destination, but a continuous journey we must all protect.”
The new INEC headquarters annex is envisioned as a state-of-the-art facility that will boost the Commission’s capacity and credibility ahead of future elections.
